LAST MARCH 2, 2011 WAS ANOTHER MEMORABLE day as Dr. Antonio P. Ligot (photo below left) delivered the 19th edition of the Dr. Jaime Zaguirre Memorial Lecture, an annual activity of the UERMMMCI Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Ligot, a well-respected UERMMMC Medicine graduate (Class 1968), talked about "Missionary Medicine: An Ifugao Experience."
Dr. Ligot shared that "we all have a personal mission to perform in our lives as physicians." He defined a person who goes on medical missions as a medical missionary and what he does as missionary medicine. He looked into the Biblical basis of missionary medicine or medical missions. He reviewed in history, how science and the art of medicine were seen as powerful tools for evangelism. He shared the phases, general
purposes and concerns of medical missionary work.
Dr. Ligot generously shared how he came to heed the call of the Good News Clinic and Hospital in Ifugao. He also imparted some challenging accounts of his 23-year work as a missionary doctor. At present, Dr. Ligot and his community are "praying for a medical missionary to come and commit to continue the work of Healing Bodies and Winning Souls to Christ."
Dr. Ligot concluded that "for those who want to consider, missionary medicine is no easy option, but I believe it is one of the ministries our Lord Jesus Christ accomplished well, very well, here on earth."
