UNDER UERMMMCI'S NEW ORGANIZATIONAL structure, we now have three business units: the academe, hospital and research units. heading the newest unit, research, as Vice President is Dr. Isaac David E. Ampil II, who was appointed by the Board of Trustees effective August 15, 2011.
Dr. Ampil, an "insider" to UERMMMCI and the current head of the Medical center's department of Surgery, was born on September 30, 1958 in Manila. He completed his primary and secondary education at letran College as a consistent honor student. He then took up Bachelor of science in Zoology at the University of the Philippines-Diliman, where he was an Entrance Scholar in
1976 and a College Scholar from 1977 to 1978. Thereafter, Dr. Ampil took up his Doctor of Medicine degree at UERMMMCI and graduated in 1984. He was a Dean's Lister of our College of Medicine from 1981 to 1983.
In the Physician's Licensure Examination administered by the Professional Regulation Commission in 1985, Dr. Ampil gave honor and pride to the Medical Center by landing in the Top 10.
Dr. ampil then completed his residency (in UERM) and fellowship (in Tokyo, Japan) trainings in Surgery. His craving for continuous learning, as a medical practitioner and educator at the same time, did not end there. he earned his Master of science in clinical epidemiology degree at the University of the Philippines-Manila in 2005. He was a scholar of the Philippine Council for health, research and development.
As a clinician, Dr. Ampil held and still holds various positions in the academe and in the hospital, and also in his local and international affiliations. He was editor of four scientific journals: the Philippine Journal of Surgical Specialties (1998-2008), the Philippine Journal of Trauma (1996-1999), the UERM Journal of Allied Health Sciences (1994-present) and the St. Luke's Journal of Medicine (2006_present). He was the former Assistant Director for Education, Training and Research of UERMMMCI from May 2002 up to April 30, 2006.
When asked about his future plans for the Research Division, Dr. Ampil stated that " For UERMMMCI to achieve its goals of providing quality education and training, the graduates we produce should not only be experts in their medical field, but also expert researchers, practicing a so-called research philosophy or attitude in their chosen fields." For this, Dr. Ampil formulated four objectives: 1) establish research utilities, 2) formulate a focused research agenda, 3) create high-quality research output, and 4) utilize research output to improve healthcare, which Research would embark on.
According to Dr. Ampil, once this research development plan is complete, he shall engage highly qualified personnel imbued with a research philosophy, adequately trained to conduct research, a well-focused research agenda and high-quality research output being utilized to improve healthcare in UERMMMCI.
We believe that with Dr. Ampil's managing prowess and his commitment, his future plans for the research division will lead UERMMMCI to the path towards the achievement of its Vision and Mission of producing quality researches in the healthcare profession.
