Lay Forum on "Common Ear Infections and Prevention"

Summer is usually the season for ear infections because many people go for swimming.

Last April 25, 2019, the UERM Hospital organized a free two-hour lecture about “Common Ear Infections and Preventions”. It was held at the OPD Lobby of the UERM Hospital from 1:00-3:00pm. This was open to patients and employees of the UERM.

Dr. Alexandrea Bayaoa, ENT specialist, delivered the two-hour lecture and addressed the queries of the audience at the end of the lecture.

According to Dr. Bayaoa, ear infection is most often a bacterial or viral infection that affects the middle ear. If it is ignored and left untreated, pain occurs because of the inflammation and accumulation of fluids in the middle ear which bacteria and viruses take hold and thereby causing an infection.

She said that the most common symptoms of ear infection include a feeling of fullness in the ear, a sharp stabbing and sudden pain, a dull and continuous pain, nausea, ear discharge, and inaudible hearing to deafness.

Dr. Bayaoa also emphasized the importance of immediate consultation with a doctor if we feel even the slightest pain or any discomfort in our ears as this may be a sign of a serious infection which can aggravate if taken for granted

Around 38 participants participated in the lay forum and completed the entire session. About three out-patients who attended the session already booked a clinic appointment with Dr. Bayaoa.
