Mentor’s Society’s “Anything under the sun” Quiz Bee

The University of the East Ramon Magsaysay-College of Allied Rehabilitation Sciences’ (UERM-CAReS) annual Quiz Bee by the Mentor’s Society was held last June 23, 2015 at the Tan Yan Kee Building, 4th Floor, Room 402-404 as part of the weeklong celebration of the National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week. The event was hosted by the club adviser, Mrs. Carmina Ann Jerez-Cortez, and members of the Mentor’s Society. Its aim is to provide a challenging and informative yet enjoyable game, with the theme “Anything under the sun”, available to all colleges of UERM.

A total of 21 pairs of students participated in the Quiz bee, all of which were enthusiastic for the event and the prizes they will receive if they managed to place within the top 3 at the end of the contest. The first to third placers will be given a cash prize of P 1,000, P 500, and P 250 respectively.

To start the event, Ms. Ma. Carmela Limjoco introduced herself as the game master and presented the mechanics of the game. The quiz bee consists of 20 easy and 10 hard questions for a total of 30 questions. For each correct answer in the easy round, the participants will receive 2 points while for the hard round, they will get 5 points. As a twist in the hard round, they will get a deduction of 2.5 points in their total score for every wrong answer, thus to avoid deduction, the contestants may choose not to answer the question. The questions consisted of general trivia ranging from famous people and places up to historical events. They were either presented as a multiple choice type of question or identification. They answered the questions by raising the card assigned to a letter for the multiple choice type questions and wrote their answers for the identification type in the provided short bond papers.

After completing the easy round, the contestants were given a 20 minute break. The club provided snacks and drinks for the contestants. As they enjoy their snacks and ready themselves for the next set of questions, Mr. David Dela Fuente tallied up the scores for the easy round.

After the students answered all of the questions for both easy and hard rounds, the scores were tallied by Ms. Miling and Ms. Obrero together with Mr. Symon Chan. After 20 minutes of tallying, the winners were announced by the game master, Ms. Limjoco and the prizes were handed out by Mrs. Jerez-Cortez. The winners were, for first place, Mr. Ben Duazo and Ms. Jo-anneRimando; for second place, Ms. Charmaine Maanoand Ms. Alyssa Genilo; and for the third place, Ms. Danielle Danganan and Ms. Via Faro.
